we are not numbers
“When the world talks about Palestinians living under occupation and in refugee camps, it is usually in terms of politics and numbers. But numbers are impersonal and often numbing. What they don’t convey are the daily personal struggles and triumphs, the tears and the laughter, and the dreams and aspirations that are universally experienced but often not recognized for Palestinians, who instead have been dehumanized. That’s why established and aspiring wordsmiths from around the world have joined with young people from Palestine to create We Are Not Numbers. Through this platform, WANN shares with the world authentic and compelling stories from the next generation of Palestinian writers and leaders.“
‘I Am Still Alive’: The Gaza genocide told in ink and paper by Palestinian artist Maisara Baroud
“Speaking about the art he created during the genocide, Maisara said, “In the midst of so much destruction and during a mass genocide, it was difficult to talk about the luxury of art, aesthetic perception, or pleasure. The war forced me to create something specific through simple lines. The forms became sharper, the lines straighter, the structure more direct, and the visual language more condensed.”
With limited resources, Maisara used inexpensive paper and ink pens to document daily life in black and white. “I managed to capture many moments, scenes, emotions, and feelings on paper in a series I called I Am Still Alive. I post these drawings daily on social media.””
Growing Palestine
“Growing Palestine is an organization committed to helping farmers in Palestine and the work they do to live sustainably on the land. We support them as they provide nutritious fruits, vegetables, and grains for their communities that are grown from seeds that are native to Palestine. The farms we work with are located in the West Bank. Another one of our goals is to support more efficient water and electricity systems to improve the running of the farms, and ensure their viability for years to come.”
